Winter Car Care: Preparing for Frosty Mornings and Icy Roads

The UK’s winter weather does not always bring heavy snow, but frost, ice and short daylight hours can still catch drivers off guard. Taking a few simple steps can make cold mornings less stressful and improve safety when temperatures drop.

Check your tyres and grip
Your tyres are the only point of contact between your car and the road, so their condition matters even more in winter. Make sure tread depth is healthy and tyres are inflated correctly, as cold air can lower pressure. If you regularly drive on untreated or rural roads, winter tyres can provide better grip and stability in colder conditions.

Look after the battery and fluids
Low temperatures put extra strain on car batteries, especially older ones. If your battery is weak, frosty mornings can make starting difficult. It is also important to check coolant and antifreeze levels to prevent freezing, and ensure engine oil is topped up and suitable for colder conditions. Keeping your fuel tank at least half full can also help prevent issues in very cold weather.

Maintain clear visibility
Winter driving often means darker mornings, rain, fog and frost. Wiper blades should be in good condition and screen wash should be winter-grade to prevent freezing. Check all lights regularly and clear any dirt or frost before driving so you can both see and be seen.

Carry a simple winter emergency kit
Breakdowns are more common in cold weather. Keeping a few essentials in the boot can make a big difference. Items such as an ice scraper, de-icer, torch, blanket, high-visibility jacket, jump leads, tyre inflator and phone charger can help if you are delayed or stranded.

De-ice safely and take your time
Always clear all windows, mirrors and lights fully before setting off. Never pour hot water on the windscreen, as it can crack the glass. Start the engine and use the heater to help defrost, but stay with the car while it is running. Once on the road, drive smoothly, avoid harsh braking and allow extra distance between you and other vehicles.

Winter conditions in the UK may be brief, but they can still be hazardous. A little preparation and a calmer driving approach can make journeys safer and more comfortable throughout the colder months.
