What to Bring When Collecting Your Used Car

Collection day is an exciting moment, but arriving unprepared can cause unnecessary delays or complications. A little organisation beforehand means everything goes smoothly and you can drive away with confidence.

Valid driving licence: You will need to present your driving licence when collecting the vehicle. Make sure it is current and that the address matches your current home address — an out-of-date address on a licence can cause issues.

Proof of insurance: You must have valid insurance in place before you drive the car away. Do not assume your existing policy automatically covers a new vehicle — check with your insurer in advance and arrange cover to start from the collection date. Many insurers can add a new vehicle to an existing policy quickly over the phone or online.

Proof of identity and address: Dealers are required to carry out identity checks, particularly when finance is involved. A passport or driving licence combined with a recent utility bill or bank statement is typically su?cient.

Payment confirmation: If you are paying a deposit or settling the balance in cash or by bank transfer, bring confirmation of the payment. If finance has been arranged, the dealer will have the paperwork ready, but it is worth having your finance agreement reference to hand.

On collection: Before driving away, carry out a final walk-around of the vehicle and compare it to the condition noted at the time of purchase. Check that all keys, handbooks, service records and any agreed extras are present.

Take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the controls before leaving the forecourt — particularly if the car has features you have not used before. A good dealer will be happy to walk you through anything you are unsure about.
