The Ultimate Used Car Checklist Before You Buy

Going to view a used car without a checklist is a bit like going to the supermarket without a list — you will almost certainly forget something important. Having a structured approach means nothing gets overlooked in the excitement of finding a car you like.

Before you arrive: Request the full service history, MOT history and any documentation relating to previous repairs. Check the MOT history online using the DVLA tool — it is free and takes seconds. Look at the advisory notes from previous tests, as these can flag recurring issues.

Exterior checks: Inspect all panels in daylight for dents, scratches and paint inconsistencies. Check that all doors, the boot and the bonnet open and close properly. Look at the condition of the windscreen for chips or cracks.

Tyres: Check the tread depth on all four tyres — the legal minimum is 1.6mm, but 3mm is a more practical threshold. Uneven wear can indicate alignment or suspension problems.

Interior: Test every button, switch and screen. Check the air conditioning blows cold. Look at the condition of the upholstery and carpets. Check for any unusual smells, which can indicate damp or mechanical issues.

Under the bonnet: Check oil and coolant levels. Look for any signs of leaks or corrosion. If the engine looks unusually clean, it may have been steam cleaned to hide a leak.

On the road: Listen for any unusual noises when accelerating, braking or turning. Test the brakes at low speed. Check that the car drives straight without pulling to one side.

A thorough check takes around 30 to 45 minutes. It is time well spent.
